New Women on Boards

Hala Print smJerri L. DeVard, Former Chief Marketing Officer of The ADT Corporation and Principal of the DeVard Marketing Group has been elected to the board of directors of Under Armor Inc. (NYSE:UA). AGCO Corp.(NYSE: AGCO) elected Suzanne Clark, senior executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as the second women on the board.

Three OnBoard members/advocates have recently joined boards. Atlanta Metro Chamber CEO Hala Moddelmog joined the board of FleetCor Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:FLT). Sue Patterson, Former Chief Accounting Officer of Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. has joined Cedar Electronics. Maureen Schumacher, marketing executive at Kimberly-Clark was elected to the board of Schnabel Engineering. Both Sue and Maureen attended OnBoard’s Board Development Group program.


June 15th Luncheon “Takeaways”

DSC_8133smBoard ready is different for different boards but in general: Boards look for skills that fill a gap among the board members. They look for executive/C-Suite experience. Governance experience and knowledge is a key “readiness” factor. Over and above skills and experience, there must be a cultural, personal “fit” with the rest of the board, so self-awareness and chemistry are key to board selection. You need to know and be able to articulate the value that you bring to the specific board. At a minimum, financial literacy is a must because it’s the “language of business”. You can also be very impactful on private boards and they have much less compliance and regulatory requirements. Then lastly, timing is everything to become a board candidate and to help that, TELL people you are interested-in a very intentional way.

Terri Jondahl, Chairman/CEO, CAB Incorporated, joined the board of Sunbelt Packaging Inc. and Rebecca Blalock, Managing Partner at Advisory Capital LLC joined Hannon Armstrong Sustainable Infrastructure Capital, Inc. (NYSE: HASI). Becky is also a member of the board of Aspen Aerogels, Inc. (NYSE:ASPN).


Pearls of Wisdom from the March 28th Luncheon

Mmartha5smarch 28th was the first major luncheon of the year with Martha Brooks as our speaker. Here is just a little of the wisdom she shared: Boards want people who are extremely self-confident (with a voice), collaborative, and collegial; Strategy could be the single most important focus of the board, not just CEO succession like some think; Watch who the board listens to because it can be very telling; Use the social time around meetings to build relationships because it will help the board operate more effectively; Boards look for P & L experience. Always take the bigger job and get variety when you can; Don’t take a seat if you don’t like and respect the CEO, unless the board plans to do something about it; A good match between you and a board is worth waiting for.

New Women on Boards

Rrbrewer2017osalind Brewer has joined the board of Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX). Roz was most recently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sam’s Club, and executive vice president of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. She is a former president and current Advocate of OnBoard.

Jeanne P. Jackson joined the Delta Air Lines’ board of directors (NYSE: DAL). She is senior strategic advisor to the chief executive officer of NIKE, Inc. and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of McDonald’s Corporation and Kraft Heinz Company.


OnBoard Development Group Taking Applications for 2017 Class

The 2017 OnBoard Development Group class will accept up to 10 women who are board ready for for-profit boards. The six sessions starting in April help the participants to raise their visibility for board candidacy. 2016 participant Terri Johdahl, CEO of CAB Incorporated, said: “You really do an awesome job on (OBDG)…What a wonderful service you are providing for aspiring women board members”.
